## 一 · 潮 — The Tide

春江潮水连海平，海上明月共潮生。
滟滟随波千万里，何处春江无月明。

*The spring river's tide runs level with the sea;*
*over the sea, the bright moon rises with the tide.*
*Glittering, it follows the waves ten thousand li —*
*where, on this spring river, is there no moonlight?*

## 二 · 花林 — The Flowering Grove

江流宛转绕芳甸，月照花林皆似霰。
空里流霜不觉飞，汀上白沙看不见。

*The river winds round the fragrant meadow;*
*moonlight on the flowering grove turns it all to sleet.*
*Frost drifts through the air and no one feels it fly;*
*on the sandbar the white sand cannot be told apart.*

## 三 · 孤月 — The Lone Moon

江天一色无纤尘，皎皎空中孤月轮。
江畔何人初见月？江月何年初照人？

*River and sky, one colour, without a grain of dust;*
*bright and alone in the emptiness, the wheel of the moon.*
*Who first, on this bank, saw the moon?*
*And in what year did the river's moon first shine on someone?*

## 四 · 代代 — Generation After Generation

人生代代无穷已，江月年年只相似。
不知江月待何人，但见长江送流水。

*Human lives, generation after generation, never end;*
*the river's moon, year after year, looks only the same.*
*No one knows whom the river's moon is waiting for —*
*we see only the long river seeing its waters off.*

## 五 · 扁舟 — The Small Boat

白云一片去悠悠，青枫浦上不胜愁。
谁家今夜扁舟子？何处相思明月楼？

*One scrap of white cloud drifts away and away;*
*on the green-maple shore, more sorrow than can be borne.*
*Whose small boat is out tonight?*
*Where is the moonlit tower that is missing someone?*

## 六 · 楼上 — On the Tower

可怜楼上月徘徊，应照离人妆镜台。
玉户帘中卷不去，捣衣砧上拂还来。

*Pity the moon that paces on the tower;*
*it must be lighting the parted one's dressing mirror.*
*In the jade door's curtain it will not be rolled away;*
*brushed from the washing stone, it comes back again.*

## 七 · 相望 — Looking at the Same Moon

此时相望不相闻，愿逐月华流照君。
鸿雁长飞光不度，鱼龙潜跃水成文。

*Now we look at the same moon and cannot hear each other;*
*I would follow the moonlight and flow until it shines on you.*
*The wild goose flies far, but cannot carry the light across;*
*fish and dragons dive and leap, and the water writes its lines.*

## 八 · 落月 — The Setting Moon

昨夜闲潭梦落花，可怜春半不还家。
江水流春去欲尽，江潭落月复西斜。
斜月沉沉藏海雾，碣石潇湘无限路。
不知乘月几人归，落月摇情满江树。

*Last night I dreamed of falling blossom over a quiet pool;*
*half the spring is gone and still I am not home.*
*The river carries the spring away, almost all of it now;*
*over the pool the setting moon leans west again.*
*The slanting moon sinks deep, hidden in the sea fog;*
*from Jieshi to Xiaoxiang the roads are without end.*
*No one knows how many ride the moonlight home —*
*the setting moon shakes its feeling out over the river trees.*
